The hotel, dating back to 1554, has an intimate restaurant serving a varied menu of well cooked dishes. It also has a reasonably priced wine list. The bar and lounge are rich in character, with open fireplaces, and filling bar meals and real ales.

Area information

A lot of our guests are real Jane Austen buffs on their way to Austen’s cottage in Chawton, where she used to live. It is in this cottage that Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility were written. Nowadays it is a popular museum displaying aspects of Jane Austen’s life and writings.

Even if you are not a fan of Jane Austen, then there is a still lot to see and do in Chawton and the surrounding area including visiting the Watercress Line and having a ride on Thomas The Tank Engine.

Important information

The hotel will be undergoing a refurbishment which will affect sections of the guest accommodation starting 31st January 2011 through to early March. The hotel will then close for 3 weeks to open again in early April. Work will start from 08:00 through to 20:00 daily.
