Area information
The city with the first national theater, for some time, has been the cultural center of the region. Buildings dating back to the late 18th century and early 19th make up the very center of the city, which gives it a touch of middle- European charm, so characteristic for all cities that lay on the banks of the Danube River.
People from all over the world find Novi Sad a place where everything goes slower, more relaxed and smoother. It is an easy going place. One of the most beautiful beaches on Danube 'Strand', is where else but in Novi Sad.
'Strand' is the place where the citizens come not just to swim, sunbathe and spend their summer days but also 'to see and to be seen'. On the opposite side of the river is Fruska Gora, a mountain as tame as the city itself and in its bottom opposite to the city is Petrovaradin Fortress.
Petrovaradin, 'City on a rock, firm as faith’. In Latin ‘Petra’ means ‘rock’ and ‘var’ is ‘city’ in Hungarian, while ‘din’ is from Turkish and it means ‘faith’. Gathering these words, we get ‘Petrovaradin’, which is in literally interpretation of our people ‘City on a rock, firm as faith’.
The Petrovaradin Fortress - historical, architectural, artistic and tourist jewel has proven to be an ideal place for the Exit festival. ‘The Gibraltar of Danube’ as it was called.
Today the fortress is a favorite tourist attraction and stage of the biggest festival in Southeastern Europe. Apart from the magic atmosphere, that puts a spell on all the visitors and performers of the festival, it offers remarkable acoustic possibilities – multiple events taking place at the same time without interference.
Art Academy, Novi Sad City Museum, Historical Archive, Equestrian Club and Archer Club all have their place at the fortress. Beneath it, is a famous complex of catacombs with sight seeing tours with professional Guide Service. Inner buildings are full of art studios where you can experience process of art in rise.
