Hotel information

The Wigwam is an unusual name for a hotel in a seaside resort, but a name with a history. Villa ‘the Wigwam’ was built in 1904 by Meinaard-Sprenger (1860-1951), his father was mayor of Domburg from 1850 to 1868. Driven by loneliness and a feeling for adventure, he left at the age of 21 to North America, where, after travelling around for some time, he ended up amongst the Blackfoot Indian tribe. He felt at home with these people and built a ranch, which he named Domburg and like the Indians, he traded cowhides.

After 20 years his cowboy life came to an end when he fell from his horse and he broke his knee, never to ride again. He sold everything and returned to Domburg. He built a villa and named it ‘the Wigwam’, which became his new home. The Sprenger-Blackfoot collection has been preserved in the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde in Leiden.

‘The Wigwam’ was officially opened as a hotel in 1951. The Bimmel family has owned the hotel since 1975. After various alternations and renovations, it has become a first class family hotel.

Area information

From way back Domburg is a well-known family seaside resort with pure seawater and clean beaches, lots of promenade and cycle routes, vast dunes and woods.
It is a good starting point to go on cultural trips to the many lovely cities and villages in the Zeeland region. A splendid golf course and subtropical swimming pool with health and fitness facilities are in the immediate vicinity, together with tennis and midget golf courses and trampolines. Bicycles are for hire in the village on 75 mtrs. from the hotel.

By Car (from the Zeelandbrug bridge):
- Coming from the Hellegatsplein (junction) follow the N59, N256 and the N255.
- Then follow the signs to Domburg.

Directions from the storm surge barrier:
- Coming from Rotterdam/Europoort follow the N57.
- Then follow the signs to Domburg.

Direction from Middelburg:
- Take the A58 (Breda, Bergen op Zoom) to Middelburg.
- Take the exit to Middelburg and then follow the signs to Domburg.

Directions from Belgium:
- From Breda (A58) or Bergen op Zoom (A12) follow the A58 to Middelburg or take the Tunnel in Terneuzen and then follow the signs to Domburg.
