Area information
The city is ideally located between Genoa and the Cinque Terre, not far from the maritime small towns of Portofino and Sestri Levante.
The city of Chiavari was already famous for its excellent craft school for furniture makers during the golden age of the Genoa Republic. Nevertheless, the history of ‘Chiavari artistic chairs’ started in 1796, when the Società Economica (an active group of local intellectual noblemen) challenged the city furniture makers to find new ways for this functional piece of furniture. The first chair models were conceived and created, at the beginning of 1800, by Gaetano Descalzi, also called ‘Il Campanino’, a name which still identifies the most ancient model, from which the ‘Chiavarina’ type developed. This is how the famous chairs were born: those chairs with an essential shape and their characteristic lightness and sturdiness, known and appreciated all over the world.
