Area information
Altavilla Milicia is 24 km. from the historic centre of Palermo, which province it belongs to. The municipality has approximately 5,500 inhabitants and its area covers 2,379 hectares. It is set on a hilly area near the coast and is 70 metres above sea-level. It is important in the agricultural field for its citrus fruit, olive trees and vines.
The small town took its name from Altavilla, in honour of the most powerful Norman family whose leaders were the Great Count Ruggero and his brother Roberto the Guiscardo. Around 1060 they began to conquer Sicily and rid it of Arabian domination.
The town’s Cathedral Church is now the destination for many pilgrimages. The church and the baronial palace, Beccadelli, are placed in an unusual position: they are side to side with a panoramic view of the coast.
