Legend has it that, during his journeys in the Mediterranean, Ulysses landed on an island inhabited by a giant with one eye, Polifemo. When Ulysses escaped, the giant flung rocks at Ulysses’ departing ship – these rocks still survive and are known as the Faraglioni.

Castle of Acicastello (0.5km) – The castle has been a fortress since Roman times and is built out of black lava stone. As well as stunning views of the bay the castle also has a small museum illuminating its history.
