Laugarvatn is a small village of about 170 inhabitants. During term time the population swells, as Laugarvatn is an educational centre. As well as schools for children in the surrounding area, Laugarvatn is also the base for the sports faculty of the Iceland University of Education.
The nearby lake offers sailing and windsurfing, while golf, horse riding and trout fishing are also available in the area. The area is also excellent for hiking and a map of local walking routes is available at the hotel.
Vigðalaug (Sacred Pool) at Laugarvatn is a geothermal spring which is reputed to have healing powers.
Laugarvatn offers a beautiful environment for visitors to enjoy, with wonderful Icelandic countryside to admire and explore. The town is also within easy reach of many of the principal attractions of South Iceland, such as Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot springs, the old parliamentary site at Þingvellir and Skálholt Cathedral.
