Area information
The area is renowned for its significant archaeological finds which include the palaces of Festos and Gortyna. The historic cave Vroutospiliara, was where the Roman general Brutus was thought to have lived.
Near Matala, other places you should visit include the beautiful mountain landscapes of Agia Triada and Gortyna. Not far away, you will find the beach of Komos, with an endless sandy beach and large black rock in the middle of the sea.
You can also visit the Odigitria monastery, or take a trip to the Agiofarago, an amazing gorge which ends at a fabulous beach. In the surrounding area, there are scattered mountainous villages everywhere, all of them full of myths and traditions.
