Area information
At the traditional village of Afitos, in a carefully chosen location, is situated the Blue Bay Hotel. Harmonized with the environment, the buildings are offering magical view. The stone and the wood are the main materials, which impeach to the traditional village of Afitos
"Afitos" of the painters, "Afitos" of the people who adore it and dream of it. Its distinctive position with the vast view to Toroneos Gulf, the architecture of its houses along with its benevolent and sometimes "archaic" inhabitants.
"Afitos" the third village in order after Potidea's canal, is situated at this position since 3000BC. Ancient Afitos was an important city of Pallini and was frequently mentioned by the ancient writers (Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Aristotle, Pausanias, Stravon etc.). The sanctuary of Dionisos (8th ce BC) and the temple of Ammon Zeus (8th ce BC) both contributed to the strengthening of its reputation. A prosperous city during both the ancient and classic year. It minted its own coin that bore the head of its protector Ammon Zeus.
During the revolution of 1821 the city gave a dynamic presence along with its fighters and victims. After the "turmoil" the inhabitants were spread in different more safe areas. Around 1827 along with the return of the fugitives, Afitos is for several years the large village of Kassandra. In the middle of the 19th ce a strong building activity is observed. In 1858 the church of Agios Dimitrios was built, a three-aisle "basilica" with dome that is considered as the vilage's jewel, located in the center of the main square. It's worthwhile for the visitor to observe the unique architecture of the church, its old icons and its stone-embossed south external wall.
