Area information
The village of Afandou is located 5 km from Faliraki and is one of the oldest and largest villages on the island of Rhodes. It was founded during the time that pirates overran the islands of the Mediterranean. During that period, people would leave the shores and seek inland shelter. Afandou took its name from the word "afandos", which in Greek means "invisible", as it could not be seen from the sea.
Visitors are encouraged to see the church of Our Lady and the popular folklore exhibition. During the summer months, a small train connects the village to the beach. The beach is over 3 km long and on the far left side, adventurous travellers can explore the caves.
