Area information
The hotel is located at the gateway to the island of Rügen, which can be seen in the distance, past the three imposing churches which dominate the cityscape. Surrounded by water, Stralsund’s Old Town is characterised by its brilliant red brick gothic buildings. Numerous listed buildings, colourful gabled houses, medieval monasteries and the impressive town hall invite you to take leisurely walks through the city, which was established in 1234.
Various brick gothic constructions bearing witness to the city’s medieval past can be found within the city walls. In 2002 the Old Towns of Stralsund and Wismar were made UNESCO world heritage sites.
Stralsund’s wide variety of attractions offers something for everyone. Here is a small selection:
- the German Maritime Museum, located in an early gothic monastic church, boasts Germany’s largest turtle aquarium
- the Museum of Cultural History, which occupies four listed buildings, harbours (amongst other things) a unique collection of early medieval gold jewellery from the island of Hiddensee
- the 13th-century town hall with its unique façade
- the parish churches of St. Mary, St. Jacob and St. Nicholas
- the Franciscan Monastery, Monastery of Saint Catherine and the Monastery of the Holy Spirit
- the city wall with its preserved city gates (the Kniepertor and the Kütertor)
- the harbour island with its old storage buildings
