Paarl lies in the heart of the Boland wine country, surrounded by majestic mountains, rolling vineyards and wine estates. It is the ideal base from which to explore Boland and the Western Cape.

The original Paarl Wine and Brandy Company was situated across the road from Zomerlust and legend has it that an underground pipe linked the maturation casks in the cellar to a tap, where guests were entertained in grand style. Today the building has been restored into a cosy pub, Die Kraan, and the owners could offer their own finely matured connoisseur brandy to their guests simply at the turn of a tap.

Paarl is the third oldest European settlement in South Africa and boasts many well-maintained and attractive Cape Dutch houses, beautiful gardens and streets lined with old oak trees.

The district is particularly known for the huge granite rock that is Pearl Mountain (Paarl Rock). It also has a number of scenic drives, a nature reserve, hiking trails, golf courses, health spas and the Paarl wine route, with its many wine tasting opportunities (including vintages from the famous Nederburg estate) and excellent restaurants.

From Cape Town:
▪ Follow the N1 to Paarl.
▪ Take Exit 55 (Paarl, Main Road), turning left at the stop street.
▪ Drive along Main Road for 3.5 kilometres, and you will see Zomerlust Guesthouse on your right-hand side (Thorp Delta on the left).
